Is Fiorinal really a painkiller? My doctor says there’s no way she’ll give it to me anyway.

Technically, butalbital (Fiorinal, Fioricet, Medigesic, Esgic, and Sedapap) is only a sedative barbiturate, but it does seem to have pain-relieving effects in many of my bipolar patients. However, it is such a dangerous and addictive substance that I seldom use it, and I never prescribe more than one day’s worth at a time.

Are there any treatments for pain that don’t involve taking medicine?

Relaxation and meditation can decrease pain (see chapter 2). There is also a place for chiropractic and acupuncture for the relief of pain, particularly in musculoskeletal problems. A process called TENS, which involves the stimulation of pain nerves by mild electrical shocks on the skin, is often effective for body pain. However, to get the most out of it, you will need to find a practitioner who understands how it works and who is practiced in the technique.
